We have particular expertise of cases of a catastrophic nature, examples of some cases in which we have been instructed include:

  • A man assaulted resulting in a serious brain injury who initially had his application for compensation refused by the CICA.
  • A woman attacked with a knife receiving injuries to her face and neck and a severe psychological reaction.  Nelsons applied to have the original CICA decision reviewed and the client's award was increased following the representations we made.
  • The victim of an assault who sustained a significant brain injury. Initially an award was denied to the victim, however, at a CICA tribunal appeal the decision not to award compensation was overturned – this claim is ongoing but the award is likely to be in the region of £300,000.
  • A man attacked with a concrete slab who received a head injury, fractured ribs and facial injuries. This client received £1950.
  • A woman who witnessed a murder of a relative resulting in a significant psychological reaction. She will also receive a dependency claim from the CICA, the final value is be assessed.
  • A female victim of a violent crime who sustained a severe brain injury and injuries to her face including a broken nose – this claim is ongoing.

We believe that handling claims of this nature requires a particularly sympathetic understanding of the needs of victims of violent crime. Our extensive personal injury experience enables us to assess accurately the appropriate level of compensation and thus to advise on many successful challenges to CICA awards. We have a number of dedicated solicitors who deal with claims to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), advising on the initial application and where necessary reviews or appeals of awards.

Our specialist lawyers will make sure your claim is properly prepared and expertly conducted. We'll look after you as well as your claim, guiding and informing you throughout the process and doing our best to give you the best result possible.

In addition to our legal expertise, we also understand the importance of consulting with treating professionals involved in your care and rehabilitation and will liaise with them throughout your case. To get the true level of compensation for your injury, we will make a detailed assessment of the consequences and support your claim with evidence from specialist medical experts.  Where appropriate we will secure interim payments for treatment which may be able to assist with your recovery.

We offer a full range of funding options including no win no fee and legal expenses insurance. We will provide a free initial consultation and advice.
