13 June 2010 – slaughter and power in Cumbria

We are told there are 5 million firearms in our country and there will be no rushed new legislation in the wake of the slaughter of innocent people. At the premeditated hand of one power-crazed man a dozen innocent lives were slaughtered some with calculation and some at random.

The media has been too quick to blame the response of a beleaguered and understaffed Cumbria police Cumbria and would be better serving the public interest by raising the sustained debate about the need for a massive review of the eligibility and certification review of all who possess firearms.

Let us hope in the weeks and months that follow the people affected by the slaughter will be provided with comprehensive public services and the privacy from media intrusion. Let us hope the media focus of criminal injury compensation and dwindling public services.
