Background To The Helpline

In October 1995, the experience and tradition of The Alder Centre and Great Ormond Street were brought together in the setting-up of the national Child Death Helpline.

Funding

As far as funding is concerned, The Samaritans relies mainly on voluntary
contributions from the public and gets only about 2% government funding. In
total we raise about £9.5m a year and spend nearly all of it. £5m of this
£9.5m is raised by General Office and £4.5m by branches. Each branch varies
widely in the amount it raises.
